Finally, a few simple environmental measures may also be helpful in reducing exposure to seasonal allergens. For example, installing an air conditioner, at least in your bedroom, may be of some benefit, although complete relief from symptoms by this means can be expected in only very mild cases. Air-conditioner filters should of course be cleaned regularly to prevent the buildup of pollen and spores. If you have central air conditioning, you might also consider installing electrostatic filters in the ducts to trap pollens and molds. Similarly, when possible, driving with your windows closed and the air conditioner on is an effective means of reducing exposure. Open car windows may expose you to as much as fifty times the amount of pollen that would otherwise reach you.
You must be especially careful outdoors. Avoid weed patches and uncut fields as much as possible, and if you plan any gardening, use a mouth and nose mask, either a double-layer surgical mask or 3M's #1800 Dust and Pollen Filter Mask. Be sure to wash your hair and launder your clothing as soon as possible afterward, especially if you have been raking leaves or mowing grass. Better still, if possible, hire a gardener. Schedule your hunting or camping trips for off-allergy-season periods. And lastly, because alcohol intake can stimulate mucus production, keep drinking to a minimum when your symptoms are at a maximum.
Taken together, these measures are practical options for most people and are better than picking up stakes entirely and moving to some other region of the country in the hope of escaping allergies.
