Drug Allergy Treatment

The best treatment for any suspected allergic reaction to a medication is the commonsense measure of stopping the drug at once. Severe reactions often require emergency treatment with epinephrine (Adrenalin), antihistamines, and systemic corticosteroid medications to suppress symptoms. Mild skin reactions can frequently be treated with bland, soothing hypoallergenic emollients alone. More severe reactions may require topical corticosteroid creams or lotions. Finally, OTC anti-itch creams containing either the topical anesthetic ben-zocaine or the antihistamine diphenhydramine should be avoided because these agents have been associated with a high risk of provoking allergic contact dermatitis in a fair proportion of people. In any event, if you have a specific question about any drug you are taking or applying, you should consult with your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
